Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our biochar production process and applications.

What is biochar?

A stable, carbon-rich material made by heating biomass without oxygen (pyrolysis). It locks carbon away for decades to centuries and can improve soil health by enhancing water retention, nutrient availability, and soil structure.

How do you generate electricity?

We recover heat from the pyrolysis reactor and run an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) to produce electricity that can connect to the local transformer and grid. This process captures waste heat that would otherwise be lost.

Where will you operate?

Near Hill City, SD, to leverage existing concrete pads, buildings, and local logistics. This location provides optimal access to forest residues and transportation infrastructure for biochar distribution.

How is biochar transported across the state?

We use various transportation methods including rail and trucking to deliver biochar to the East River region for agricultural application on unproductive corn fields and other marginal agricultural land. This flexible approach ensures efficient, cost-effective distribution.

What feedstock do you use?

Ponderosa pine residues and other clean forest by-products from logging operations. Primary reactor prefers cleaner fractioning for part of the feed to optimize biochar quality and process efficiency.

What are the environmental benefits?

Our process reduces wildfire risk by removing forest residues, sequesters carbon for centuries, produces clean renewable energy, and improves soil health. Each ton of biochar can sequester 2-3 tons of CO₂ equivalent.
