Turning forest waste into soil health and clean power

Dakota Biochar converts ponderosa pine residues into high-value biochar and renewable electricity in the Black Hills.

Our Story

In the Black Hills, logging leaves behind treetops and branches that are often piled and burned. Dakota Biochar turns these residues into biochar—returning carbon to the soil—and clean electricity through high-efficiency pyrolysis and ORC power recovery.

We partner with local timber companies and growers to transport biochar across South Dakota and apply it on unproductive acres, creating a sustainable cycle that benefits forests, farmers, and communities.

Our process not only reduces waste and wildfire risk but also generates clean power for rural grids while sequestering carbon for decades to centuries.
